The democratic Europe has been collaborating with communists in the Republic of Moldova for the last 8 years since they took the whole power in the country. Collaboration is good, no doubt about it, as Moldova is a small country open and welcoming both West and East. But the rush, with which EU officials have recognized the results of April 5 elections, without even trying to listen to the opposition, is nauseating. It’s another proof that European leaders are just true bureaucrats behaving like ostriches hiding their heads in the sand, and not noticing that for those years Voronin and his clique has managed to turn the whole country into his own business with a very limited liability.
While after the collapse of the Soviet Union Moldova was a well doing nation with same standards of living as Baltic States and probably higher than neighboring Romania, during the communist administration it turned into officially the poorest country in Europe.
Though democrats who led the country during the first years of independence were not ideal, they managed to launch market reforms, started to integrate Moldova into the international community, and most important, people were free, mass media was diverse and free, there was no fear and the system of checks and balances was in place.
All these achievements have been slowly and methodically scrapped since communists came to power in 2001. Voronin is smartly cheating both West and Russia, when necessary, and has successfully implied to the international community that only his party can maintain stability and integrity of the country.
Yes, to some extend I admit that communists with their stubborn opposition to ungrounded pretensions of neighboring Romania may have saved the country from collapse. But with what price? With giving a carte blanche to Voronin and his closest allies to declare themselves saviors of the nation and rip off whatever assets have remained in the country. What Moldova paid for turning the so called communists, who theoretically should take care of workers and peasants, into multimillionaires, is as follows:
Moldova has turned into the poorest country in Europe;
up to 1 million of able-bodied people have left Moldova in search for better earnings and better life conditions, often leaving behind their children, who grow without any parental care and proper education;
women trafficking, in which Moldova is shamefully among the world’s leaders;
stalled economic reforms, absence of a fair capital market, banking interest rates unbearable for honest businesses, bureaucracy and state interferences into and racketeering of businesses, absence of real competition, and so on, with all of these leading to the fact that the poorest country in Moldova has prices for goods and services higher than in most of Europe!;
the countryside lives in total poverty, and most of villages are half empty;
ironically those who left the county running from the regime, have been helping to keep it afloat!, as Moldova has become nation no.1 in the world by the ratio of foreign remittances in its GDP. Moldova, traditionally an agricultural country has started to import practically all types of food;
nothing has been done in the energy sector, in promoting a higher energy independence and diversification of energy supplies, the communist mafia controlling all businesses in this domain;
there is no viable system of democratic checks and balances of power, and if during democrats corruption was high but still beatable, now it turned in an uncontrollable state phenomena, with communists prosecuting only opposition, but no once can control the communists;
there is no equitable access of any opposition to state TV and Radio, major opposition newspapers having been put under pressure of prosecutors or state security services, a young journalist brutally attacked and remained invalid for the rest of her life because she was investigating wrongdoings in the Interior Ministry;
abuses of police and maltreating of prisoners and detainees, high corruption in police forces;
many opposition leaders prosecuted under prefabricated terms;
on the other side, the case when drugs traffickers caught by anti-drugs unit were apparently covered by other special policemen directly reporting to Minister of Interior, is never solved until now;
totally corrupted legal system and judges completely controlled by the communists, which led to a great amount of unfair cases reaching the European Court of Human Rights, where the Government of Moldova obviously lost and has to pay tens of millions of dollars of ... taxpayers’ money!
And all these NOT SEEN BY DEMOCRATIC EUROPE?! So, are we talking about an arrogant double standards practice in the heart of Europe?!
Now about the elections on April 5th, which OSCE and EU and CIS observers claim to have been fair and without major violations.
People in Brussels, democratic elections are judged NOT ONLY ON THE ELECTION DAY, BUT ALSO DURING THE WHOLE ELECTION CAMPAIGN! And during the election campaign communists have extensively used the administrative resources, speculated with foreign humanitarian assistance giving it out as electoral presents from their party, speculated with offering “cheaper bread”, have totally occupied the state TV and radio, abused the use of prosecutors and special services against opposition leaders, buying out of votes through a selective distribution of various state assets, changed the electoral voters’ lists, in which now opposition has found tens of thousands of frauds, and so on.
Wake up, Europe and Brussels, if communists had built a viable state, then it should not collapse with change of power! Communists of Moldova are outdated political speculators, and the younger opposition has much better people for promoting real democracy and true rule of law.
Younger generation has filled the streets of Chisinau being tired of and not willing another 4 years of lies, fear, state corruption, poverty, humiliation of a person\'s dignity, injustice, absence of pluralism and so on. 8 years of bullshit and stagnation are enough, and communists should have made some adjustments by bringing in new trustworthy people on top levels and start real changes, and not declarations. Now it’s too late, they have to leave, because they cannot live honestly and didn’t manage to mend the generation gap. However, it is utmost regrettable that many of young unexperienced people give in to provocateurs and started violence and vandalism, which are both inexcusable, especially when it causes human victims and destruction of state property.
In any case, all who said that elections were just and equitable, should look deeper into Moldova’s real problems, before stealing the hope for a better life from the other 70% of the population who didn’t vote for communists.
The only thing evil needs to succeed, is for good people to do nothing about it.
