Fidel Castro - Former President of Cuba

At least three quarters of Cubans consider him to be the true leader. For several decades the United States attempted to get rid of Fidel Castro, but he managed to outlast nine American presidents after taking power back in 1959. He is known for his long-lasting anti-American and anti-imperialism speeches. He opposed capitalism and said: "I find capitalism repugnant. It is filthy, it is gross, it is alienating... because it causes war, hypocrisy and competition." Despite the fact that a lot of people (mostly outside Cuba) had unsympathetic feelings towards him, Castro did succeed in registering considerable improvements in Cuba. He made medical care freely available for everyone, there's also 98 percent literacy (one of the highest in the world) and the infant mortality rates in the country is almost on the same level as in the Western countries. In addition, Castro, being friend with Hugo Chavez, managed to achieve advantageous agreements with the oil-rich Venezuela. His supporters say that Cuba has one of the most efficient healthcare systems and a stable government, while those who criticize him claim that Cuba constantly violates human rights, Castro is a dictator and that the country has a stagnant economy, remaining far behind modern living standards.
